At one time the term
"Southerner" referred to certain common images of a unique Christian
agrarian society and culture that so shared common Biblical moral practices of
honour and integrity that their people were increasingly coming to be seen as a
distinct "race" of people of which the lives of northern Americans were
viewed as the moral antitheses.
As Southern
morals are falling to the lower level of northern morals the northern lower
moral levels have devolved even more to the point of "amorality" or
the absence of morality and an honest ethical base. This has given some Southerner's
a false sense of cultural superiority thinking they have remained a moral
culture when in reality they are only slightly above the new yankee norms of
degraded morals.
More than ever
the normative levels of Biblical definitions of moral honesty and integrity are
seen as fanatical and out of reach of "normal" human behaviour for
real people. Shockingly this is condoned by churches that have lowered their
"tests of fellowship" to accommodate the lower immoral practices of
their members so that their members can remain "respectable" members
of their church or denomination in good and regular standing. Traditional
church discipline is out the window and seen as unduly harsh and unloving.
Moral standards
that were at one time seen as absolute are now seen as irrelevant and unneeded
and only promoted by religio-bunko artists. But, there in little comfort in the
new mantra that says "Well, everyone is doing it."
